Fridays from 6pm-8pm Ages 13-18
Sessions are run weekly at Avon Drama Studio,
Warwick University, Westwood site
Highly Sprung Workshops have been established since September 2003 and have received good attendance since its foundation. Unlike many formal performing arts clubs and schools, the Highly Sprung Workshops do not seek to provide training in dance, drama and singing, but instead work to develop and encourage the creative confidence of the young participants through the exploration of physical performance.
The impact of this approach has been extremely successful. The intention is not to create potential artists of the future but to provide young people with the skills and experiences to understand the importance of self-expression and how they can apply these skills to general life.
The workshops give young people the space, time and
tools in which they can gain an understanding of
themselves and of others. This gives confidence to them
as decision-makers and problem-solvers, and encourages
them to work collaboratively. This allows them to explore-
within a supportive framework- not only a range of human
feeling, but also a whole spectrum of approaches
and techniques.
The Friday workshops aim to develop skills in physical
theatre and contemporary dance at a more advanced
level. It is not aimed to create material for performance,
but termly presentations are made to an invited audience to demonstrate the progress of the students. There are occasionally opportunities to develop performance for alternative events such as carnival or youth festivals, but this work varies annually.
The overall aim and ethos of these sessions are similar to those of the Saturday workshops.
